What is Ulthera?

Ulthera (Ultherapy) is a micro-focused ultrasound device from Merz Aesthetics. Its key feature is built-in ultrasound imaging: the doctor can see the skin layers on screen and place energy at the intended depth, including the SMAS, the supportive layer beneath the skin and fat.

Small heated points in these layers contract the tissue and start collagen renewal, giving a gradual lift to the brows, cheeks, jawline and under the chin. The newer platform is Ultherapy PRIME; for a faster, lower-cost HIFU option, see Shurink Universe.

How Ulthera works

Ultrasound energy is focused at precise depths under real-time imaging. Tiny heated points tighten the SMAS and deeper skin, and new collagen forms over the following months for a gradual lift.

  1. Consultation: your doctor assesses sagging and plans the areas, depths and number of lines.
  2. Treatment: after numbing cream, the transducer images the tissue and delivers focused ultrasound for about 30–60 minutes.
  3. After: mild redness or tenderness may occur, and you can return to your day.

Why patients choose Ulthera

  • Reaches the SMAS layer — the same layer tightened in a surgical facelift.
  • Precise with real-time imaging — energy placed at the intended depth.
  • Lift without surgery — no incisions or recovery time.
  • Long-lasting — results typically last 6–12 months.

Who is Ulthera for — and when we suggest something else

Good candidates

  • Your cheeks, jowls or brows have started to drop, and you want a gradual lift.
  • You want energy placed under real-time imaging for precision.
  • You have a softer jawline or loose skin under the chin.
  • You prefer one session a year rather than frequent maintenance.
  • You want a non-surgical option with no downtime.

We may suggest something else if…

  • Crepey texture is the main issue, not sagging. RF such as Thermage FLX works on the skin itself.
  • You want regular, budget-friendly lifting. Shurink Universe is faster and usually more affordable.
  • Your face is very thin or hollow. Strong ultrasound may not help, and volume from Juvelook Skin or filler may suit you better.
  • You have an active skin infection, open wounds or severe acne in the area, or you are pregnant. We advise waiting.

What happens at your Ulthera session in Seomyeon

  1. Message us on WhatsApp first. Send a front and side photo, the areas you want lifted, and whether you also want skin Botox or a skin booster.
  2. Consultation with Dr. Park. She assesses sagging, fat and skin thickness, and plans the areas, depths and number of lines.
  3. Preparation and numbing. Numbing cream is applied for about 30 minutes. The skin is cleansed and a gel is applied for the imaging probe.
  4. The treatment. The transducer shows the skin layers on screen and delivers focused ultrasound over about 30–60 minutes. Bony areas can feel prickly.
  5. Out the door and follow-up. There is no downtime. Lift builds over 2–6 months, so message us a photo at about three months.

How Dr. Park plans your Ulthera treatment

Ulthera is planned in lines, also called shots. Our packages use 300 or 600. With 300, Dr. Park focuses on the areas that matter most, such as the jawline and lower cheeks. With 600, she can cover the full face and under the chin more thoroughly.

The imaging screen lets her see the layers before each line. She chooses the depth for each zone, including the SMAS where support is needed. She avoids placing energy too close to bone or nerves.

One session is usually enough for a visible change, repeated every 6–12 months. Packages may add skin Botox or a hydrating skin booster 3cc for skin quality. A natural result comes from even coverage, not from the maximum number of lines.

Ulthera results: what to expect and when

  • Right after treatment: some people notice slight tightening; mild redness is common.
  • Months 2–3: lifting and firmness develop as collagen renews.
  • Around months 3–6: the result usually reaches its peak.
  • Months 6–12: results gradually fade with ageing; repeat to maintain.
  • Please note: results and timing vary by person.

Side effects, risks and who should avoid Ulthera

Ulthera is generally well tolerated when performed by a doctor. Possible side effects include:

  • Redness or mild swelling (usually settles within hours to a few days)
  • Tenderness or a bruised feeling, especially along the jaw, for a few days to weeks
  • Rarely, temporary numbness, bruising, welts or nerve irritation

Not suitable if you: are pregnant; have an active skin infection, open wound or severe acne in the area; have metal implants or a pacemaker near the treatment area (tell your doctor); or have very thin skin and little fat in the area. Tell your doctor about recent fillers, threads or other procedures in the area.

Ulthera results timeline: when results appear and peak, and how long they last (About 6–12 months)

Ulthera vs Ultherapy PRIME, Thermage FLX and Shurink Universe: which should you choose?

Patients usually weigh Ulthera against these three options.

Treatment How it works Best for Downtime Results last
Ulthera Focused ultrasound with real-time imaging Sagging cheeks, jowls, brows None About 6–12 months
Ultherapy PRIME Newer Ultherapy platform with upgraded imaging Same goals, latest hardware None About 6–12 months
Thermage FLX Monopolar RF heats the deep dermis Crepey skin, overall firmness None About 6–12 months
Shurink Universe HIFU at set depths, without imaging Jawline, affordable upkeep None About 6–12 months

Choose Ulthera for imaging-guided lift of deeper sagging. Choose Thermage FLX if skin texture matters more. Choose Shurink Universe for budget maintenance between sessions.

Aftercare after Ulthera

Downtime after Ulthera, and flying home

Most people look normal soon after treatment, with mild redness that fades within hours. Some feel tenderness along the jaw or slight swelling for a few days. You can go sightseeing the same day. Avoid the sauna, jjimjilbang, hot baths, alcohol and hard exercise on treatment day.

Makeup can usually be applied once the skin has calmed. Use sunscreen for 1–2 weeks and avoid rubbing the treated area. Flying is generally fine; tenderness may feel more noticeable when chewing on the plane. Tell Dr. Park your flight date at consultation. See our aftercare tips for travellers.

Is Ulthera worth it compared with cheaper HIFU?

It depends on your goals. Ulthera's main difference is real-time imaging: the doctor sees the skin layers before placing energy. That helps target the SMAS precisely and avoid areas where energy should not go.

Cheaper HIFU devices, such as Shurink Universe, do not image but are faster and suit regular maintenance. For more marked sagging, many people prefer Ulthera once a year. Some alternate, with Ulthera yearly and lighter HIFU between sessions. Dr. Park will be honest if a lower-cost option fits your face just as well.

How many Ulthera lines do I need?

Our packages use 300 or 600. Around 300 suits focused treatment of key areas, such as the jawline and lower cheeks. Around 600 allows fuller coverage of the face and under the chin.

The right number depends on face size, how much laxity you have and your budget. More lines do not always mean a better result. Placement and depth matter as much as the total. Dr. Park will suggest a count at consultation, and you can discuss options before treatment starts.

Does Ulthera make your face thinner?

Ulthera is a lifting treatment, not a fat-reduction treatment. Lifting the jawline can make the lower face look more defined, which some people read as slimmer.

Some people worry about losing facial volume. Dr. Park adjusts depth and avoids over-treating areas where fullness keeps you looking youthful. This matters most for already slim faces. If you want fat reduction, ONDA or a contour injection may suit you better. If you have hollows, a volume treatment may be combined. Bring photos of how you looked a few years ago if that helps explain your goal.

Ulthera vs Ultherapy PRIME: what is the difference?

Both deliver micro-focused ultrasound with real-time imaging down to the SMAS layer. Ultherapy PRIME is the newer platform from the same maker, with upgraded imaging and hardware. Your doctor will advise which suits your goals and budget.
