What is Licorice Injection (Glycyrrhizin)?

Glycyrrhizin (glycyrrhizic acid) is the main active compound of licorice root. Injectable glycyrrhizin preparations have long been used in East Asia to support the liver and to calm inflammation, including in some skin conditions.

At Art of Shine Clinic the licorice injection is offered as condition care for people who drink regularly, feel tired, or have recurring skin trouble. It does not replace treatment for liver disease. For acne flare-ups you can also look at the Anti-Inflammatory Injection, and for tiredness the Garlic Injection (Vitamin B1).

How Licorice Injection (Glycyrrhizin) works

Glycyrrhizin has anti-inflammatory and liver-protective actions. Given intravenously, it reaches the bloodstream directly. Because it can affect the body's salt and potassium balance with frequent use, the doctor checks your blood pressure and history first.

  1. Consultation: the doctor reviews your health, medications and allergies and confirms the injection suits you.
  2. Treatment: the injection is given slowly into a vein in your arm over about 5–10 minutes.
  3. After: you rest briefly, then return to your day. Drink plenty of water.

Why patients choose Licorice Injection (Glycyrrhizin)

  • Liver support — glycyrrhizin is traditionally used to support liver function.
  • Anti-inflammatory action — may help calm recurring skin trouble.
  • Helps with tiredness — a popular choice after a busy or heavy week.
  • Quick, no downtime — about 5–10 minutes and you are on your way.

Who is the Licorice Injection for — and when we suggest something else

Good candidates

  • You drink alcohol often and want general condition care
  • You deal with recurring skin trouble and want supportive care
  • You feel persistently tired and run-down
  • Your blood pressure is normal and you have no heart or kidney disease
  • You want a quick 5–10 minute injection with no downtime

We may suggest something else if…

  • You have one or two angry acne spots — the Anti-Inflammatory Injection goes straight into each spot
  • You have high blood pressure, low potassium, or heart or kidney disease — glycyrrhizin can worsen these, so we suggest another option
  • You simply want more energy — the Garlic Injection (Vitamin B1) focuses on vitamin B1
  • You take diuretics or other medicines that lower potassium — Dr. Park reviews these first

How Dr. Park plans your Licorice Injection treatment

Glycyrrhizin is a compound from licorice root with anti-inflammatory properties. Dr. Park uses it as supportive care, not as a treatment for liver disease. If you have abnormal liver tests, she will advise proper medical follow-up.

Safety shapes the plan. Frequent or long-term glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure and lower potassium. So she asks about your blood pressure and medicines, and keeps an eye on how often you have it.

Sessions are usually 1–2 weeks apart. The clinic lists it in the single AOS Nutrient IV Infusion. It is also part of Customized Nutrient Injections: 10 Sessions, so you can rotate it with other nutrients.

Licorice Injection (Glycyrrhizin) results: what to expect and when

  • During the injection: most people feel nothing beyond the needle.
  • Same day to a few days: some people report feeling less tired — this varies by person.
  • With regular sessions: used every 1–2 weeks as ongoing care, as advised by the doctor.
  • Ongoing: effects are temporary and not the same for everyone.

Side effects, risks and who should avoid Licorice Injection (Glycyrrhizin)

The licorice injection is generally well tolerated in short courses. Possible side effects include:

  • Bruising, tenderness or mild swelling where the needle or cannula was placed
  • Light-headedness, especially if you have not eaten
  • Rarely, irritation of the vein or an allergic reaction (rash, itching, breathing difficulty — tell staff immediately)
  • With frequent or long-term use, fluid retention, higher blood pressure or low potassium (pseudoaldosteronism) — the doctor monitors for this

Not suitable if you: have high blood pressure, low potassium, or heart or kidney disease; take diuretics or other medicines that lower potassium; are pregnant or breastfeeding; or are allergic to glycyrrhizin or licorice. Tell your doctor about all medications.

Downtime after the Licorice Injection, and flying home

There is no recovery period. In the first day you may notice a small bruise on your arm. Drink water and avoid heavy drinking on the day of treatment. Rest before leaving if you feel light-headed.

You can go sightseeing and wear makeup straight away. A sauna or jjimjilbang is better saved for the next day. Flying is generally fine, but tell Dr. Park your flight date. If you are having several injections over a short trip, she will space them carefully. Read our aftercare tips for travellers.

Does the licorice injection cure a hangover?

No. It is not a hangover cure and it does not make heavy drinking safe.

Glycyrrhizin is used as supportive care for people worried about liver strain and fatigue. A hangover is usually handled with water, food and rest. If you drink heavily and regularly, the most useful step is cutting back and having your liver checked by a doctor. Signs such as yellow skin, dark urine or pain under the right ribs need proper medical care. Dr. Park would rather give you honest advice than an injection that hides a problem.

Why does the doctor ask about my blood pressure before a licorice injection?

Because glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure and lower potassium, especially with frequent or long-term use. This effect is called pseudoaldosteronism.

It can cause fluid retention, swollen ankles, headaches or muscle weakness. The risk is higher if you already have high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease, or take diuretics. Older adults may also be more sensitive. Dr. Park checks these before treatment. If you are unsure of your blood pressure, tell us on WhatsApp and it can be checked at your visit. If it is high, she will suggest a different option.

How many licorice injections can I have in a row?

There is no single safe number for everyone. Dr. Park sets the frequency for you, usually 1–2 weeks apart.

She considers your blood pressure, medicines and how many injections you have had recently, including any elsewhere. If you plan a long course, she may suggest a pause or rotating with another nutrient. Good alternatives include the Garlic Injection (Vitamin B1) or the Vitamin C Injection. Tell her straight away if you notice swelling, palpitations or unusual weakness between sessions. These can be early signs of low potassium.

Licorice Injection (Glycyrrhizin) FAQ

How much is the licorice injection in Busan?

At Art of Shine Clinic in Seomyeon, the AOS Nutrient IV Infusion autumn event lets you choose one injection, including glycyrrhizin (licorice), for KRW 29,000 per session. A 10-session package is KRW 290,000. Prices exclude 10% VAT.

Does the licorice injection hurt?

You feel only a quick pinch as the fine needle enters the vein. The injection takes about 5–10 minutes and needs no numbing. A small bruise at the site is possible and fades within a few days.

Is the licorice injection safe for everyone?

No. Glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure and lower potassium with frequent use, so it is not suitable if you have high blood pressure, low potassium, or heart or kidney disease. The doctor reviews your history before treatment.

Can I drink alcohol after the licorice injection?

Avoid heavy drinking on the day of treatment. The injection is not a hangover cure or a reason to drink more. There is no downtime, so you can go sightseeing straight away.

Licorice injection or anti-inflammatory injection for acne?

The licorice injection is a whole-body IV for general condition and mild skin trouble. The anti-inflammatory injection is placed directly into individual inflamed acne spots to calm them quickly. Your doctor can advise which fits your skin.

Can I have the licorice injection on the same visit as a skin treatment?

Often, yes. It takes only 5–10 minutes, so it fits easily around a skin appointment. Dr. Park decides whether combining it with another treatment is sensible. Each treatment is charged separately.

Do I need a blood test first?

Not always. Dr. Park decides based on your history and medicines. If you have recent blood pressure readings or blood test results, bring them to your consultation. They help her judge whether glycyrrhizin is safe for you.

How do I book the licorice injection?

Message us on WhatsApp on +82 10-2689-0370. The clinic is open Mon–Fri 10:00–20:00 and Sat 10:00–16:00 (closed Sundays and 13:00–14:00 for lunch). Payment is made at the clinic on the day.
