Extraction cleanly removes trapped sebum and comedones from your pores. By keeping pores clear and reducing the spread of inflammation, it forms the foundation of acne treatment and care.

Quick answer: Extraction is a medical acne care procedure in which sterile instruments are used to clear blackheads, whiteheads and trapped sebum from pores, helping stop inflammation from spreading. At Art of Shine Clinic in Seomyeon, Busan, it takes about 20–30 minutes, needs no numbing and leaves only 1–2 days of mild redness. It is offered in packages from KRW 89,000 with a black peel and ultrasound care (excl. 10% VAT).

What is Extraction?

Comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) form when sebum and dead skin cells block a pore. Left alone, they can become inflamed red spots. In medical extraction, the skin is cleansed and softened, then sterile tools are used to open and empty blocked pores gently, with less risk of damage than squeezing at home.

Extraction is a basic step in most acne plans and is often combined with a peel such as Aqua Peel or Black Peel. Painful, deep spots that should not be squeezed can be calmed with an Anti-Inflammatory Injection instead.

How Extraction works

Softening the skin loosens the plugs in blocked pores. Sterile instruments then remove the contents with controlled pressure, and the skin is calmed afterwards to reduce redness and protect the skin barrier.

  1. Consultation: your doctor reviews your acne and decides which lesions should be extracted and which need other care.
  2. Extraction: the skin is cleansed and softened, then blocked pores are cleared with sterile tools over about 20–30 minutes. No numbing is needed.
  3. After: soothing care is applied. Mild redness usually fades within 1–2 days, and sessions are typically repeated every 2–4 weeks.

Why patients choose Extraction

  • Clears blocked pores — removes sebum, blackheads and whiteheads.
  • Helps stop spreading — reduces the chance of comedones turning into inflamed spots.
  • Safer than squeezing at home — sterile tools and controlled technique.
  • A strong foundation — works well with peels, lasers and other acne treatments.

Who is acne extraction for — and when we suggest something else

Good candidates

  • People with blackheads, whiteheads and clogged pores on the nose, chin or forehead.
  • People with early acne before it becomes deeply inflamed.
  • People with oily skin who feel congested despite cleansing.
  • Anyone tempted to squeeze spots at home and wanting a safer option.
  • Visitors who want acne care with only 1–2 days of mild redness.

We may suggest something else if…

  • A spot is deep, hard and painful. An Anti-Inflammatory Injection is safer than pressing on it.
  • Acne keeps returning in the same spots. Agnes targets the glands behind recurring acne.
  • Your main concern is dull tone and rough texture rather than blockages. Black Peel or Aqua Peel may suit you.
  • You have acne scars rather than active spots. Potenza works on scar texture.
  • Your skin is sunburnt, broken or recently peeled. We usually wait for it to recover.

What happens at your Extraction session in Seomyeon

  1. Message us on WhatsApp first. Send a photo of your skin and mention any acne medicines, peels or retinoids you use.
  2. Consultation with Dr. Park. She checks which lesions are ready for extraction and which are too inflamed. She also decides whether a peel or injection should be added.
  3. Preparation. The skin is cleansed and softened to make pores easier to clear. No separate anaesthesia is required.
  4. The treatment. Sterile tools clear sebum and comedones with controlled pressure, over about 20–30 minutes. You feel pressure and brief stinging.
  5. Out the door and follow-up. Temporary redness lasts 1–2 days. Repeat every 2–4 weeks while acne is active.

How Dr. Park plans your extraction treatment

Extraction is about timing and restraint. Comedones and ready whiteheads are cleared. Deep, swollen lesions are left alone or treated another way, so inflammation is not pushed deeper.

Dr. Park often pairs extraction with other steps. Our packages combine it with Aqua Peel and anti-inflammatory injections over 5 sessions, or with a facial Black Peel and ultrasound care. Scar-focused packages add Gold PTT and Genesis in 1 or 3 sessions.

Sessions are spaced every 2–4 weeks. This keeps pores clear while acne is active, without over-handling the skin.

Extraction results: what to expect and when

  • Right after: pores look clearer; mild redness and small marks are normal.
  • Days 1–2: redness fades.
  • Weeks 2–4: fewer blocked pores; a repeat session helps keep them clear.
  • Ongoing: regular sessions with home care support clearer skin. Results vary by person.

Side effects, risks and who should avoid Extraction

Medical extraction is a routine acne care step. Possible side effects include:

  • Redness, mild swelling and stinging (usually fade within 1–2 days)
  • Small pinpoint marks where pores were opened
  • Rarely, bruising, temporary darkening of the skin or infection if spots are picked afterwards
  • Extraction does not reduce oil production on its own

Not suitable if you: have an active cold sore or skin infection in the area; are taking or have recently stopped isotretinoin (your skin may be more fragile, so tell your doctor); or have very inflamed, deep cysts, which are better treated in other ways first.

Extraction vs Aqua Peel, Black Peel and Anti-Inflammatory Injection: which should you choose?

These are often combined, but each has a different job.

Treatment How it works Best for Downtime Results last
Extraction Sterile removal of sebum and comedones from pores Blackheads, whiteheads, early acne Temporary redness for 1–2 days Varies by person; every 2–4 weeks
Aqua Peel Solutions and suction cleanse and hydrate pores Congested pores, regular deep cleansing None; return to daily life immediately Varies by person; every 1–2 weeks
Black Peel Peeling care refines dead skin and sebum Dull tone and rough texture None; return to daily life immediately Varies by person; every 1–2 weeks
Anti-Inflammatory Injection Medication injected into an inflamed lesion Deep, painful single spots Inflammation eases within 1–3 days Until that lesion resolves

Choose extraction when pores are visibly clogged. Choose an injection for a deep, painful spot. Choose a peel for regular cleansing and tone between extraction visits.

Aftercare after Extraction

  • Temporary redness or stinging may occur and usually settles soon.
  • Avoid scrubs and peeling products for about a week.
  • Apply sunscreen thoroughly.
  • On the day of treatment, avoid saunas, hot baths and strenuous exercise.
  • Moisturise well to help restore the skin barrier.

Downtime after extraction, and flying home

Mild redness and a little stinging usually settle within 1–2 days. Some pores may look slightly marked for a day. You can sightsee immediately afterwards. Moisturise well to help the skin barrier recover, and wear sunscreen.

Avoid saunas, jjimjilbang, hot baths and hard exercise on the day. Skip scrubs and peeling products for about a week. Light makeup is usually fine the next day. Flying is generally fine. Tell Dr. Park your flight date so she can plan combined treatments around it. See our aftercare tips for travellers.

Will my pores look bigger after extraction?

No, extraction does not enlarge pores. Pores can look temporarily open or red right after clearing. This usually settles within a day or two.

Over time, clearing blockages can make pores look less obvious. Pore size is mostly set by genetics, oil production and skin ageing. If enlarged pores are your main concern, extraction alone will not shrink them. Dr. Park may suggest treatments that work on oil glands or collagen. Ask her which option suits your skin.

Can extraction make acne worse?

Rough or poorly timed extraction can. Pressing on a deep, inflamed lesion can push bacteria and debris further into the skin. That raises the risk of swelling and scarring.

This is why Dr. Park only extracts lesions that are ready. Deep spots are left alone or treated with an injection. A short-term flare can happen while the skin adjusts, but this is usually mild. Message us if any spot becomes very painful or swollen after your visit. Do not try to finish extracting it at home.

How often should I get acne extraction in Busan if I visit for a short time?

One session can clear current blockages, but acne usually needs repeat care. While acne is active, sessions every 2–4 weeks are typical.

If you are only in Busan briefly, Dr. Park may combine extraction with a peel or injection in one visit. She can also suggest a simple home routine to continue afterwards. Gentle cleansing, non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen help maintain results. Plan return visits if you come to Busan regularly. Tell us your dates on WhatsApp so we can suggest a realistic schedule.

Extraction FAQ

How much does acne extraction cost in Busan?

At Art of Shine Clinic in Seomyeon, extraction is offered in packages. A facial Black Peel with extraction and ultrasound care is KRW 89,000. Five sessions of Aqua Peel, extraction and anti-inflammatory injections are KRW 290,000 (excl. 10% VAT).

Does acne extraction hurt?

You will feel pressure and brief stinging as each pore is cleared, especially on the nose and chin. Numbing is not usually needed, and the skin is softened first to make extraction gentler. A session takes about 20–30 minutes.

How often should I have extraction?

Most people benefit from sessions every 2–4 weeks while acne is active. Extraction clears existing blockages but does not stop oil production. Your doctor may combine it with peels, lasers or other treatments for longer-lasting control.

Can I go out or fly after acne extraction?

Yes. Mild redness usually fades within 1–2 days, so you can continue your plans. Avoid saunas, hot baths and hard exercise on the day, skip scrubs and peeling products for about a week, wear sunscreen and moisturise well.

Why not just squeeze spots at home?

Squeezing with fingers can push debris deeper, spread bacteria and increase the risk of marks and scars. Medical extraction uses sterile tools and controlled pressure after softening the skin. Your doctor leaves deep inflamed spots alone or treats them differently.

Who performs extraction at Art of Shine Clinic?

Dr. Park Yoon-soo, our Head Director, assesses your skin and decides which lesions are ready to extract. She graduated from Kyungpook National University School of Medicine and completed her internship at Asan Medical Center.

Can I book extraction on a Saturday?

Yes. We are open Saturday 10:00–16:00, as well as Monday to Friday 10:00–20:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00. Book a time on WhatsApp, as sessions take about 20–30 minutes.

Is extraction available as a single treatment?

Our listed prices are for packages that combine extraction with peels or other care. Ask on WhatsApp whether a stand-alone session is possible on your dates, and for its price.
