What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is the brand name of semaglutide for weight management, made by Novo Nordisk. Semaglutide mimics GLP-1, a natural gut hormone that signals fullness, slows stomach emptying and helps regulate blood sugar. It is a prescription medicine approved for chronic weight management in adults who meet medical criteria, typically based on BMI and weight-related health conditions.

At Art of Shine Clinic, Wegovy is prescribed only after a doctor's assessment and is intended as part of a longer-term plan with healthy eating, activity and follow-up — not as a quick cosmetic fix. You can compare it with Mounjaro(tirzepatide), which acts on both GIP and GLP-1.

How Wegovy works

Semaglutide acts on GLP-1 receptors in the gut and brain, helping you feel full sooner and reducing hunger between meals. Treatment starts at a low dose that is increased step by step over several weeks to help limit stomach side effects.

  1. Medical assessment: the doctor reviews your weight, BMI, health conditions, family history and medications to confirm Wegovy is appropriate and safe for you.
  2. Prescription and training: if suitable, you are prescribed a low starting dose and shown how to self-inject under the skin of the stomach, thigh or upper arm once a week.
  3. Follow-up: the dose is increased gradually, side effects are reviewed, and the plan includes diet and activity changes.
How Wegovy works: weekly GLP-1 injection explained in a simple diagram

Why patients choose Wegovy

  • GLP-1 appetite control — helps you feel full sooner and less hungry.
  • Once-weekly dosing — one self-injection a week.
  • Gradual dose steps — designed to help your body adjust.
  • Medical supervision — prescribed and reviewed by a doctor with follow-up.

Who is Wegovy for — and when we suggest something else

Good candidates

  • You are an adult who meets medical criteria for weight management, usually based on BMI and weight-related conditions
  • You struggle with appetite and frequent hunger despite trying lifestyle changes
  • You want a doctor-supervised plan rather than a quick fix
  • You can attend follow-up visits as the dose is gradually increased
  • You are comfortable injecting yourself once a week

We may suggest something else if…

  • You or a close family member have had medullary thyroid carcinoma, or you have MEN2 — Wegovy is not prescribed
  • You have had pancreatitis — not suitable
  • You are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding — we wait
  • You want a dual-action medicine after discussion with the doctor — Dr. Park may consider Mounjaro
  • You want a slimmer jawline or less local fat rather than overall weight loss — ask about the Contour Injection

What happens at your Wegovy session in Seomyeon

  1. Message us on WhatsApp first. Share your height, weight, health conditions and medicines. Include thyroid, pancreas, gallbladder and diabetes history, and how long you are staying.
  2. Consultation with Dr. Park. She assesses eligibility, medical and family history, and medicines. She talks you through side effects and what to expect.
  3. Preparation. No numbing is needed. If prescribed, you learn how to store the pen and inject under the skin once a week.
  4. The treatment. You start at a low dose and inject weekly at home. Mild nausea is the most common early feeling.
  5. Out the door & follow-up. There is no downtime. Follow-up checks side effects before each dose increase. Contact the clinic immediately about persistent side effects.

How Dr. Park plans your Wegovy treatment

Dr. Park only prescribes Wegovy after a medical assessment. She checks that you meet the criteria and that nothing in your history makes it unsafe. She also asks what you have already tried.

Semaglutide is started at a low dose and increased every four weeks, following the product label, until a maintenance dose is reached. If side effects are hard to manage, she may slow the increases. The clinic does not list fixed packages online; your plan is agreed at consultation. See how prices and payment work.

She keeps expectations realistic. The medicine is designed to be used with diet and activity changes, and its effects last only while you take it. Results vary and cannot be promised.

Wegovy results: what to expect and when

  • First weeks: the low starting dose helps your body adjust; nausea is most common now.
  • First few months: the dose is increased step by step; appetite changes and any weight change are gradual and vary by person.
  • Longer term: results depend on dose, lifestyle and individual response, and cannot be promised.
  • If you stop: appetite usually returns and weight may be regained, so stopping should be planned with your doctor.

Side effects, risks and who should avoid Wegovy

Wegovy is a prescription medicine with known side effects. Common and important ones include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating or indigestion — the most common side effects, usually worst when starting or increasing the dose
  • Reduced appetite, tiredness or headache
  • Mild redness or itching at the injection site
  • Less commonly: gallbladder problems (gallstones), dehydration that can affect the kidneys, or low blood sugar if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea
  • Rarely: pancreatitis (severe, persistent stomach pain) or serious allergic reactions — stop the medicine and seek urgent care

Not suitable if you: have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2); are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding; have a history of pancreatitis; have had a serious allergic reaction to the medicine or its ingredients; or have type 1 diabetes. Tell the doctor about gallbladder disease, kidney problems, diabetic eye disease, eating disorders and all medications.

Tell the doctor that you take this medicine before any surgery or sedation, because it slows stomach emptying. People with diabetes should also mention any eye (retinopathy) problems.

Wegovy vs Mounjaro and Contour Injection: which should you choose?

Two of these are prescription medicines for overall weight; one is a local contour treatment.

Treatment How it works Best for Downtime Results last
Wegovy Weekly semaglutide injection acting on GLP-1 Medically eligible adults managing weight None; GI side effects common early Only while you keep taking it
Mounjaro Weekly tirzepatide injection acting on GIP and GLP-1 Medically eligible adults managing weight None; GI side effects common early Only while you keep taking it
Contour Injection Contouring injection into local facial or body areas Slimmer cheeks and jawline Return to daily life immediately Varies by individual

Choose Wegovy or Mounjaro only after Dr. Park confirms eligibility; she will recommend one for your health and tolerance. Choose the contour injection if you want to refine a local area rather than lose weight overall.

Aftercare after Wegovy

  • Use exactly the dose prescribed and follow your medical team's instructions; do not increase it yourself.
  • Nausea or indigestion is common early on and usually eases over time. Eat smaller meals and stop when full.
  • Stay well hydrated, especially if you have vomiting or diarrhoea, and pair treatment with balanced eating and regular activity.
  • Tell us in advance if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or taking any medication, including insulin or diabetes tablets.
  • Store pens as instructed (usually refrigerated before first use), and ask how to carry them if you are flying.
  • Seek urgent care for severe, persistent stomach pain (with or without vomiting), and contact the clinic about any side effect that does not settle.

Downtime after Wegovy, and flying home

There is no recovery period, but stomach side effects are common at first. Nausea, burping, diarrhoea or constipation may appear within the first days of a new dose. Eat slowly, choose smaller portions and keep hydrated. Get urgent help for severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting or signs of an allergic reaction.

You can sightsee if you feel well; carry water and plain snacks. Our Weight Loss page lists other options. Avoid saunas and jjimjilbang while you have vomiting or diarrhoea, to prevent dehydration. Before flying, tell Dr. Park your travel dates. Ask her how to keep pens at the right temperature and carry them with your prescription. Check airline and destination rules. How do I carry Wegovy pens on a flight?

Carry them in your hand luggage with your prescription or a doctor's note. Checked bags can get too cold or be lost.

Follow the storage instructions in the pack, which allow limited time out of the fridge. Do not let pens freeze or overheat. Rules for bringing prescription medicines into a country differ, so check your destination's requirements before you fly. Dr. Park can tell you how much supply is sensible and write a note if needed. Ask her at your consultation.

Why do I feel sick on Wegovy, and will it pass?

Nausea is the most common side effect. Semaglutide slows stomach emptying, so food stays in your stomach longer.

It is usually worst after starting or increasing the dose and often eases over a few weeks. Small, low-fat meals, eating slowly and stopping when full all help. Avoid lying down right after eating, and go easy on alcohol and fizzy drinks. If nausea stops you eating or drinking, or you vomit repeatedly, contact the clinic. Dehydration can harm the kidneys. Dr. Park may slow the dose increases or pause them until you feel better.

Can I take Wegovy if I have diabetes?

Possibly, but Dr. Park needs to review your diabetes treatment carefully first. Combining Wegovy with insulin or sulfonylureas can cause low blood sugar.

Your other medicines may need adjusting, ideally with the doctor who manages your diabetes. People with diabetic eye disease also need extra care, because rapid improvements in blood sugar can affect the retina. Bring your recent blood sugar results and medicine list to the consultation. Tell her about any eye checks you have had. Never change your diabetes medicines without advice from the doctor who prescribes them.

Wegovy FAQ

How much does Wegovy cost in Busan?

Art of Shine Clinic does not list a fixed online price for Wegovy, because the dose and plan depend on your doctor's assessment. Message us on WhatsApp for a quote. Prices are in KRW and exclude 10% VAT.

Who can be prescribed Wegovy?

Wegovy is a prescription medicine for adults who meet medical criteria, usually based on BMI and weight-related conditions. It is not prescribed if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, a history of pancreatitis, or are pregnant.

What are the side effects of Wegovy?

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and stomach discomfort are the most common, especially early on and after dose increases. Less commonly, gallstones or dehydration can occur. Severe, persistent stomach pain needs urgent care as it may signal pancreatitis.

Can I start Wegovy on a short trip to Busan?

Wegovy needs a doctor's assessment, gradual dose increases and regular follow-up, so a single visit is not enough on its own. Discuss with the doctor how ongoing care would work at home and how to carry pens when flying.

Wegovy or Mounjaro: which is right for me?

Wegovy (semaglutide) acts on GLP-1, while Mounjaro (tirzepatide) acts on both GIP and GLP-1. Both are once-weekly injections with similar side effects. The doctor recommends one based on your health, history and tolerance.

Who decides whether I can have Wegovy?

Dr. Park Yoon-soo, Head Director of Art of Shine Clinic, assesses you and decides. She may recommend another approach if Wegovy is not safe or suitable for you. Read more about her on our doctors page.

Can I drink alcohol on Wegovy?

Keep alcohol low. It can worsen nausea and dehydration, and adds calories. If you have diabetes, alcohol can also raise the risk of low blood sugar. Ask Dr. Park for advice.

Do foreign patients pay a different price for Wegovy?

The clinic does not list a fixed online price for Wegovy. Prices are in KRW, exclude 10% VAT and are paid on the day. Ask on WhatsApp for a quote.
