What is Premium Sedation?

Remimazolam is a newer, ultra-short-acting sedative from the benzodiazepine family. It is broken down quickly by enzymes in the body, so its effect starts and ends fast, and a reversal medicine is available if needed. Given through a small IV line, it produces a relaxed, sleep-like state.

At Art of Shine Clinic, Premium Sedation is a comfort option for people who are very anxious or are having longer treatments. The doctor decides whether sedation is appropriate after reviewing your health. For lighter, needle-free relaxation, see AIRNOX; for another IV option, see Standard Sedation.

How Premium Sedation works

Remimazolam acts on GABA receptors in the brain, which calm nerve activity and produce sedation. Because the body breaks it down quickly, the medical team can adjust the depth of sedation during treatment and you wake up relatively quickly afterwards.

  1. Assessment: the doctor reviews your health, medications, allergies and fasting, and confirms that sedation is appropriate for you and your treatment.
  2. Sedation and monitoring: a small IV line is placed, remimazolam is given, and your oxygen level, heart rate and blood pressure are monitored throughout.
  3. Recovery: you wake in the recovery area and rest until fully alert; an adult companion then takes you home.
How Premium Sedation works: doctor-monitored sedation explained in a simple diagram

Why patients choose Premium Sedation

  • Ultra-short-acting — remimazolam starts and wears off quickly.
  • Sleep-like comfort — suited to anxious patients and longer treatments.
  • Faster recovery — most people are alert again within about 10–20 minutes.
  • Continuous monitoring — oxygen, heart rate and blood pressure are watched throughout.

Who is Premium Sedation for — and when we suggest something else

Good candidates

  • You have a strong fear of pain or of the treatment itself
  • Your treatment is long or more uncomfortable
  • You value a quicker recovery than with conventional sleep sedation
  • You can fast as instructed and leave with an adult companion
  • You have no serious heart, lung or breathing disease

We may suggest something else if…

  • You only need light relief and want to stay awake — AIRNOX may be enough
  • You have significant heart or lung disease, or severe sleep apnoea — Dr. Park may advise against sedation
  • You have not fasted as instructed — sedation is postponed
  • You cannot arrange to get home safely with an adult — we reschedule
  • You take a GLP-1 weight-loss medicine such as Mounjaro or Wegovy — tell the doctor; timing may need to change

What happens at your Premium Sedation session in Seomyeon

  1. Message us on WhatsApp first. Tell us your main treatment, health conditions, all medicines and any past reactions to sedation. We send fasting instructions with your booking.
  2. Consultation with Dr. Park. She checks your heart, lung and breathing history, medicines and fasting. She confirms Premium Sedation is the right choice.
  3. Preparation. Usually no food for about 6–8 hours and clear fluids only until about 2 hours before, unless told otherwise. A small IV line is placed and monitors are attached.
  4. The treatment. Sedation starts within about 1–2 minutes. You rest in a sleep-like state while oxygen level, heart rate and blood pressure are monitored.
  5. Out the door & follow-up. Most people recover in about 10–20 minutes. Leave with an adult, do not drive that day, and contact the clinic if you feel unwell later.

How Dr. Park plans your Premium Sedation

Why remimazolam

Premium Sedation uses remimazolam, an ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine sedative. Because it wears off quickly, recovery is often shorter than with conventional sleep sedation. Dr. Park chooses it when a fast recovery matters.

Adjusting to you

The amount is adjusted to your body and response during the treatment, not fixed in advance. The team watches your breathing, oxygen level, heart rate and blood pressure throughout.

One treatment at a time

Sedation is planned separately for each treatment. Its effect lasts only during the treatment. The listed price is KRW 250,000 and is added to the cost of your main treatment.

Premium Sedation results: what to expect and when

  • 1–2 minutes: you become drowsy and drift into a sleep-like state.
  • During treatment: the team adjusts the sedation and monitors you continuously.
  • 10–20 minutes after: most people are awake and alert; you rest until steady.
  • Rest of the day: you may still feel drowsy, so take it easy and do not drive.

Side effects, risks and who should avoid Premium Sedation

IV sedation is generally safe when given with monitoring by a trained medical team, but it carries real risks. Possible side effects include:

  • Drowsiness, dizziness or unsteadiness for a while after waking
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Pain or bruising where the IV line was placed
  • Less commonly, slowed breathing or a drop in blood pressure — this is why oxygen level, heart rate and blood pressure are monitored throughout and the team can respond immediately
  • Rarely, an allergic reaction to the medicine

Not suitable if you: are pregnant or breastfeeding; have significant heart, lung or breathing disease (including severe sleep apnoea), or serious liver or kidney disease; have had a previous bad reaction to sedation or are allergic to the sedative; have not followed the fasting instructions; or cannot arrange to get home safely. Tell the doctor about all medications, alcohol use and any sleeping pills or tranquillisers. Remimazolam is a benzodiazepine, so mention any benzodiazepine or opioid use.

Before your visit: usually no food for about 6–8 hours and clear fluids only until about 2 hours before, unless the clinic gives you different instructions. Bring an adult to take you home or travel by taxi with a companion, and do not drive, cycle or operate machinery for the rest of the day. If you take a GLP-1 weight-loss medicine such as Wegovy or Mounjaro, tell the doctor before sedation, as these medicines slow stomach emptying.

Premium Sedation vs Standard Sedation and AIRNOX: which should you choose?

Here is how the clinic's three comfort options compare.

Treatment How it works Best for Downtime Results last
Premium Sedation IV remimazolam, sleep-like sedation Longer treatments when quick recovery matters About 10–20 min recovery; no driving that day Only during treatment
Standard Sedation IV sleep sedation Longer treatments or sensitive areas About 20–30 min recovery; no driving that day Only during treatment
AIRNOX Inhaled nitrous oxide through a nose mask Light relaxation for short treatments About 5–10 min after mask off Only while inhaling

Choose Premium Sedation if you want to be in a sleep-like state and recover faster. Choose Standard Sedation if Dr. Park recommends it for your treatment. Choose AIRNOX if light relaxation while awake is enough. See all Sedation & Anesthesia options.

Aftercare after Premium Sedation

  • Follow the pre-treatment instructions, including fasting, exactly as given.
  • Rest until you are fully awake and steady; staff will confirm when you are ready to leave.
  • Go home with an adult companion; do not drive, cycle or operate machinery for the rest of the day.
  • Avoid alcohol, sleeping pills and important decisions or commitments on the day of treatment.
  • Tell us in advance about any heart, lung or breathing conditions and all medications.
  • Tell the medical team straight away if you feel unwell during or after treatment.

Downtime after Premium Sedation, and flying home

Most people are alert again within about 10–20 minutes, but judgement and coordination can stay affected for the rest of the day. Leave with an adult companion. Do not drive, cycle, drink alcohol, sign important documents or make big decisions that day. Eat lightly once you feel ready, and follow the aftercare for your main treatment.

Plan a quiet afternoon instead of busy sightseeing; avoid saunas and jjimjilbang that day. Flying the same day after IV sedation is not ideal. Tell Dr. Park your flight date when booking so she can advise on timing. Leaving at least until the next day is a cautious general rule. If you take a GLP-1 medicine such as Wegovy, mention it before sedation. Read our aftercare tips for travellers.

What is remimazolam and how is it different from propofol?

Remimazolam is an ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine sedative. Propofol belongs to a different class of sedative.

Remimazolam is broken down quickly in the body, which is why recovery is often fast. As a benzodiazepine, its effect can also be reversed with a specific antidote if needed. Every sedative carries risks, including slowed breathing and low blood pressure. That is why monitoring matters more than the drug name. Your oxygen level, heart rate and blood pressure are watched throughout. Dr. Park chooses the option that fits your health and treatment. Tell her about any past reaction to sedation.

Why do I have to fast before sedation?

Fasting lowers the risk of stomach contents entering the lungs while you are sedated. This is called aspiration and can be serious.

Under sedation, the reflexes that protect your airway are weaker. A usual rule is no food for about 6–8 hours and clear fluids only until about 2 hours before. Always follow the specific instructions the clinic gives you. If you take a GLP-1 medicine such as Mounjaro or Wegovy, tell the doctor, because your stomach empties more slowly.

Why do I need someone to take me home after Premium Sedation?

Because sedatives can affect your judgement, balance and reactions for hours, even when you feel awake. Leaving alone is not safe.

An adult companion can make sure you get back to your hotel safely and notice if you feel unwell. If you are travelling alone, tell us when booking so we can discuss options before the day. Do not drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day. Avoid alcohol and important decisions, such as signing contracts, until the next day. Have someone stay nearby that evening if possible.

Premium Sedation FAQ

How much is Premium Sedation in Busan?

At Art of Shine Clinic in Seomyeon, Premium Sedation is listed at KRW 250,000 in the AOS Anesthesia Package, added to the cost of your treatment. Prices exclude 10% VAT; please confirm on WhatsApp when you book.

Do I need to fast before Premium Sedation?

Yes. Usually no food for about 6–8 hours and only clear fluids until about 2 hours before, unless the clinic gives different instructions. Fasting lowers the risk of stomach contents entering the lungs during sedation.

Will I feel anything during Premium Sedation?

Most people are in a sleep-like state and remember little of the treatment. You may feel the IV needle at the start. The team monitors your oxygen level, heart rate and blood pressure the whole time.

Can I go sightseeing after Premium Sedation?

You can leave after resting until fully alert, usually 10–20 minutes, but you must go with an adult companion and should not drive that day. Plan a quiet rest of the day rather than busy sightseeing.

Premium Sedation or Standard Sedation?

Both are IV sleep-like sedation. Premium Sedation uses remimazolam, which is ultra-short-acting, so recovery is often quicker (about 10–20 minutes). Standard Sedation usually takes about 20–30 minutes to recover from. The doctor recommends one for your treatment and health.

Who decides whether I can have Premium Sedation?

Dr. Park Yoon-soo, Head Director of Art of Shine Clinic, decides after reviewing your health and treatment. She may recommend a different level of sedation, or none, for your safety.

Can I add Premium Sedation on the day?

Plan it when you book on WhatsApp, because you need to fast beforehand and bring a companion. Without fasting, sedation cannot go ahead that day. Dr. Park still confirms it suits you after a consultation.

Do foreign patients pay the same price for sedation?

Premium Sedation is listed at KRW 250,000, excluding 10% VAT, and is added to your main treatment. Payment is made at the clinic on the day. Separate visitor pricing is not listed; confirm on WhatsApp.
